Welcome to Middlesbrough

Industrial, cultural and ambitious, Middlesbrough is a large town in North Yorkshire, North East England. Becoming known as a fantastic place for business enterprise and international students as well as its long standing reputation as an important port and steel manufacturer the town has more to offer than you might have initially thought.

You can’t think of Middlesbrough and not think about the iconic Transporter bridge - the longest of its kind in the world, the 111 year old bridge is no longer used for its original purpose but instead houses the only UK bridge bungee jump and has been the set on many film and tv moments such as Billy Elliot and Auf Weidersehen Pet. Despite no longer being open, you can still visit and learn all about its history at the visitor centre.

The town's steel industry  was at one time prolific and exported across the globe. Many of the famous bridges you know and love from around the world, including the Sydney harbour bridge in Australia is made using Teesside steel.

Speaking of Australia, the man who made the discovery of Australia in 1770, Captain James Cook was born in Middlesbrough and is one of its most famous sons. You can visit the Captain Cook's Birthplace Museum just a short drive from the city centre to learn more about the Captain's life and voyages.

When you think of Middlesbrough, natural beauty and countryside may not initially jump to mind but the town is situated on the edge of the North York Moors and only a short journey to the Yorkshire Dales! Many Smoggies (The unofficial name for people from Middlesbrough) spend their weekends hiking up Roseberry Topping or rambling along the Moors. Many say that when they spot Roseberry Topping from the A19, they know they are home.

Nowadays Middlesbrough has major economic ambitions and as well as getting a growing reputation for developing digital businesses through the University, it has also been voted by the Financial Times as one of the Top 10 Small European Cities and Regions of the Future.

The Teesside town is certainly gathering momentum and maintaining its hard working reputation for the foreseeable future-  that’s why we love it.

Our Personal Favourites:

We’re big foodies at NGU Homesales & Lettings so we love to head to Linthorpe Road where there are award-winning restaurants and also Baker Street - a vibrant area with new cafes, and micro-pubs with delicious homegrown British food.

If you’re looking for a Teeside delicacy then you must also try a ‘Parmo’  which you can find in most takeaways, it consists of breaded chicken or pork that is fried then covered with cheese.  If you’re on a diet then beware!

Enjoy something off the beaten path but still bang in the centre of town? Then we would suggest The Twisted Lip; a hidden gem that does things a little differently - from the beer they serve, the music they play, and even the secret cinema on a Monday night.

The Orange Pip market, or ‘The Pip’ as it is affectionately known, was established in 2016 but already has built up a name for itself, drawing in huge crowds from each event. Featuring loads of fantastic food and drink, live music, entertainment, and beautiful buys from indie makers, it’s one of the best days out in ‘Boro.
