Be aware of further changes to council tax payments
As landlords, you will all be aware that last year in April there were changes to council tax on empty properties. Traditionally you were given a 6 month exemption when a property was unfurnished & empty before you were liable for council tax. This has now changed!!
You are now liable to pay for council tax on your property while it’s empty, sometimes from day 1. Below is a reminder of when council tax is liable from the date your property becomes empty.
Council | What % Landlords have to Pay |
Newcastle | 0% For 28 days. Then 90% For 6 Months. Then 100% Thereafter. |
Sunderland | 75% for Class C (6 Months) 150% For Property Empty over 2 Years 75% For Class A (12Months) |
Gateshead | 0% For 2 Months. Then 100% Thereafter. |
Redcar & Cleveland | 100% |
Northumberland | 100% |
Middlesbrough | 100% |
Stockton on Tees | 100% |
Durham | 100% |
South Tyneside | 0% for 28 Days For Class C, Then 100% Thereafter. 0% For Class D (Major Structural Exemption) |
Hambleton | 0% For 28 Days. Then 50% for 5 Months. Then 100% Thereafter. |
Darlington | 0% For 28 Days. Then 100% Thereafter. BUT: 150% For Properties Empty for 2 Years or more |
